GNO: Denise Dolan’s Favorite Things

I was born in Perryville, MO and grew up in St. Louis.  I’ve been married for thirty-five years to my best friend, and have been teaching music for thirty-four years. I’m Mom to three remarkable girls.

My Most Favorite Thing: I was born in 1959 which put me in my preteen and teens in the late 60’s and throughout the 70’s…..which by music standards was an awesome era to grow up in.  The influence of the music that was coming through my green leather transistor radio sitting on top my desk rocks my world to this day.   The artists of the times shaped the way we dressed, the way we felt, the way we reacted to politics and wars and even the way we loved.   Sitting on the floor next to the console stereo in the living room (which was a standard piece of furniture back in the day) with my ear against the speakers listening to Herb Alpert, Gene Krupa, and The Pioneers. As my dad’s albums turned, my love of music enhanced.  I couldn’t get enough!

Then, there was Christmas of ’67…..Santa brought me a guitar.  It was a 3/4 Gretsch Acoustic.  My world was ‘rocked’.  All that music…..was on my finger tips now!  I started taking guitar lessons and continued all the way through grade school and into high school.  It was my escape… therapy… refuge…..and still is almost 50 years later.

“Where words fail, music speaks” Hans Christian Anderson

My Favorite Artist:
We all know your high school years can bring many influences into your life and for me it opened up a new world of artists.  About 1974,  the artist Dan Fogelberg came into my life.  His music. His lyrics.  I fell hard.

“Love when you can
Cry when you have to
Be who you are
It’s a part of the plan
Await your arrival
With simple survival
And some day we’ll all understand.” – Dan Fogelberg

My Favorite Hobby: Even though I was born in Perryville  and grew up in St.Louis, I was raised on country living-canning/quilting/ gardening-which gave me that innate love of gardening. I look forward to spring when I can get outside and work the soil in my two large gardens.

There is nothing better than going out to the garden and picking the fruit of your labors or grabbing a canning jar of veges in the middle of winter to cook up for dinner. If my husband would let me, I’d take over the whole back yard and turn it into farmland!

My Favorite Line From a Movie: In the movie, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Toula and her mother were discussing how the dad is the head of the household and her mother says:

“The man is the head but the woman is the neck. And she can turn the head anyway she wants!”

My Favorite Snack: Popcorn, a diet Dr.Pepper and…..a good book 🙂

My Favorite Accomplishment: My girls (pictured below).
