The Stable

What are we doing here?

It’s what shaken, disoriented people ask when they find themselves in unfamiliar territory.

It’s the right question for 2020.

It’s one of the questions a teenage girl might have asked when about to give birth for the first time in a stable far from home.

Why here, Lord? Why now? Why me?

A miniature stable from a familiar box is a good distraction from worn-out questions. I’m pulling it out and placing it center stage, where it belongs. Already it reminds me of something bigger, and it grounds me.

For now, the stable stands empty, common, and wanting. But as The Story unfolds, I know it will become the perfect place for weary travelers to rest. A fitting shelter on a rough night. The right frame for Grace.

Not because of its structure, location, or charm. It can only be made perfect by the One who chooses it. Inhabits it. For life.

My stable has been out of the box for just a few minutes but it already reminds me that any place in time can be made fit for The King. That’s really good news in a rough year. It’s really good news for every desperate soul with an empty, common, and wanting heart.

What are we doing here?

If you’re like me, you might need to shove aside some distractions and clear the stage a bit for The Story to sink in this year.

We also need to pull our unstable hearts out of hiding for whatever He has next.

Will you join me? I’ll keep arranging my nativity set, along with some words here, during Advent. Let’s walk toward Bethlehem together.

But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah,
who are too little to be among the clans of Judah,
from you shall come forth for me
one who is to be ruler in Israel,
whose coming forth is from of old,
    from ancient days.

Micah 5:2

Love,

Karen

My heart smiled when I saw there was fresh manna from one of my favorite writers. I’m ready to journey with you…unstable hearts…so good!

We all need this journey this year – the Stable providing stability for our “unstable hearts.” Thank you for giving us a framework for this Advent journey!
