GNO with Amalia LaViolette: Sex, Double Chins, and Gossip

Don’t know what Girls’ Night Out is all about? Click HERE first.

I am a singer, Weight Watcher Leader, Bible Study Facilitator, Mother, and Wife (not necessarily in that order) . I loves Jesus, animals, and senior citizens. I also love clothes, make up, and accessories.

What would you tell the “younger you” about marriage?

So many women underestimate how important sex is to their marriage and to their husband. Generally speaking, I’ve learned that the more of a priority I make it, the healthier our marriage seems to be. I wish I would have known that earlier.

What is the best beauty/fashion tip that someone gave you?

When you smile, stretch your neck out a little. It takes away any double chins. Also, if you are a little overweight, don’t tuck in your shirt! What would you tell the “younger you” about body image? How do you resist the lies that our culture tells you about your body? I have vowed that I will not look at myself in the mirror and say something hateful. I may sigh once in a while, but this is the body I’ve got and I’m so grateful I have lived another day in it. Many don’t get that chance.

What has God taught you about trusting Him?

Pray His Word back to him. Put it on index cards and tape them to a prominent place.

What is the best homemaking/cooking/cleaning tip that someone gave you?

There are never enough chocolate chips in cookies, add more. And a little almond extract does wonders. Grow your own herbs, it’s super easy and people are impressed when you have fresh herbs on your meals.

What advice would you give a young bride?

Start out praying with your husband. If you make it a habit, you’ll stick with it.

What advice would you give a new mother?

Accept help graciously. Don’t be afraid to ask for help either. Nurse your baby if at all possible, you won’t ever regret that.

What advice would you give to a young woman who just got her first “real” job?

Pay yourself and God first. If possible, put 10% in savings, 10% to God, and the rest is yours.

What has God taught you about friendship?

Try not to burn bridges. You never know when that person will cross your path again.

How has God revealed your gifts to you? What are they?

My gifts are administrative, mercy, and teaching. They’re my natural inclination and when I learned what spiritual gifts were, I was excited that they’re really God’s gifts.

How has God given you understanding about your identity in Him?

Years of in-depth Bible Study.

What advice would you give to a young woman just starting college?

Make friends and find them in the right places. Get involved with lots of groups, but especially a bible study of some kind.

How do you deal with gossip? What advice would you give in this area?

That’s a tricky one… I try to just kind of nod and not say anything and that usually kills the conversation. It’s tough though. I haven’t mastered this yet.

What is a lie that you believed as a younger woman that you don’t believe now?

God is out to punish me.
What woman most inspires you and why?

My mother. She is strong but gentle, loving, funny and like Martha Stewart in the kitchen.

What else would you like to share?

Have a sense of humor. It’s ok to give a situation some levity, and it’s ok to laugh at yourself. Everyday you need to laugh. Get together with friends, make time for that.

Your friend,
Amalia
