GNO: Linda Tackes’ Favorite Things

I wear so many hats!  I am a wife to John for 23+ years. We met  25 years ago in the law school library at UMKC where we both went to school.  We have 3 great kids: Joseph, Julia and Jacob.  With two in college now, life is changing!  I work as a pediatricians, am a political news junkie and love to try new coffee shops.  I met Karen Brown years ago at Central Presbyterian ChurchCentral Presbyterian Church and we got to know each other better thru a Hidden Heart Ministry class.  In my free time, I enjoy reading, gardening, traveling  and spending time with my family and friends.

My Favorite Place to Travel: I LOVE to travel! It can be a short get away with my husband, just one of the kids, a friend or even by myself for a work conference.  There is something about being a stranger in a new town, city or country that makes me want to explore everything.  Visiting museums, parks, shops, and just people-watching is so much fun. However, I am also a creature of habit who likes to be quiet, and still and get away from the chaos of my usual routine.

There are certain towns that just feel like home…that you dream about living in one day.   For our family, that place has been Ephraim, Wisconsin.  It’s a little town near the tip of the peninsula that juts out into Lake Michigan.  A perfect destination to escape the St.Louis heat in the summer and take a dip in that cool, clear lake water…Can I get an AMEN?!?  It is warm during the day and cool enough to crack the window and grab a blanket in the evening.  You can seen the stars at night and the cell reception is so poor that I make note of it  on my automatic e-mail reply that I set up before I leave town.  I’m sure they think I’m exaggerating, but it’s true:

“I can’t be reached reliably by text or cell but I will be checking my e-mail once a day.”

That should be enough when you are on vacation… If you make it up north, be sure to rent a bike to ride thru Peninsula State Park, play a round of putt-putt golf at The Red Putter and have a bite to eat at Wilson’s.

My Favorite Bible verse:  Psalm 46:10  “Be still and know that I am God”

I cannot read or meditate on this verse enough because I am a recovering control-freak.  That is probably not absolutely true.  I’m just THINKING about recovering from being a control freak…but admitting it is the first step, right? I was recently reading a devotional online that talked about the Hebrew root of the command to “be still” which is more accurately translated into “cause yourselves to let go.” I am constantly trying to step out of God’s way and trust in Him.  My family and my closest friends could give you ample illustrations of my many attempts. (Family and friends: do NOT comment in the comments section. A simple smiley face or thumbs up emoji will do just fine😊👍. No need to crash any computers over a few silly stories).  Let’s just agree that I am a work in progress!

My Favorite thing About My Job: I have had the absolute privilege of being a general pediatrician for the last 20+ years.  I have been allowed to walk along side many children and their families during the day-to-day illnesses, the absolute sweetest of times , and during the most tragic, painful moments in their lives. There are days that I  get to smile and laugh with little kids and remember how carefree life can be at a young age. I have seen families grow and have met the next generations of many families. I have also  been  humbled by the families that struggle with a multitude of disorders and illnesses that face their children.

My favorite memory of all of those moments? Being able to bolster a young mom’s confidence, lighten somebody’s burden  or help a family find an answer to a difficult question.  I enjoy being able to discuss difficult health topics, but I also get to be a reflection of God’s love to people who work in my office and walk into my office everyday.  I am blessed to have a job that really is my calling.

My Favorite Teacher:  Miss Hein was my middle school choir teacher. Shortly after we met her, she married and she became Mrs. Dudley.  I believe we were her first 7th grade class ever and we LOVED her with our big ‘ol middle school hearts and our toothy brace-faced grins.  I think she got married a few years after  the wedding of Princess Diana to Prince Charles and in my 13 year old brain, her wedding must have been as grand.

She was young and she was cool and she always raised her eyebrows at us and made funny faces when she had her back to the audience to make us smile when we were getting ready to perform at a concert or school assembly.  I got to play the piano to accompany the choir from time to time and she was super patient with this very methodical (not so musically inclined) student.  I really can’t carry a tune and if somebody starts to harmonize, I automatically go flat, but she still encouraged me to “make a joyful noise.”   My friend Andrew and I were reminiscing about her recently and he told me she is still teaching piano in Kansas City.  I hope she is.  She is a gifted teacher.  I still remember the tune to “Sky Boat Song.”
